2009 ‘Country
Energy’ Nyngan Ag Expo
A GREAT BIG DAY!
“It was
a brilliant day with perfect weather, a big excited and enthusiastic crowd, just
over 170 terrific exhibits, sponsors who were very supportive of our program and
a team of helpers from our committee members, gate and parking attendants
through to Barry and Rick who made sure the grounds were in perfect condition
for the whole day” said Terry Tremain, chair of the 2009 ‘Country Energy’
Nyngan Ag Expo.
“On behalf of the Nyngan Ag Expo committee, I’d like to extend our sincere
thanks and appreciation to everyone who participated in our big day!
Of course without the support of our community we wouldn’t be able to
bring such an event together. We
have been rewarded with some incredibly positive feedback already and we hope
that next year will be even bigger and better”
“Our
major sponsor Country Energy included cooking demonstrations at their site and
showed the heights they reach to ensure electricity supplies are resumed in our
homes and businesses during storms and rough weather if a power outage occurs.
The Bogan Shire Council’s ‘Bogan Bush Mobile’ proved a welcome
relief to families giving mums and dads a break while their young children had
the chance to play in the sandpit. Central
West Catchment Management Authority had a terrific display of their projects and
programs run across the region and the Outback Motor Inn’s “Food & Wine
Experience” was delightful with some fantastic fare and wines.”
Don Lister, vice chairman said “The focal point of our Expo is of course
agriculture and this year we were fortunate to have an award winner within our
cattle section, Stephen & Amity Chase of Waitara Angus Stud who recently won
the NSW Farmers ‘Young Farmer of the Year’ award.”
Tim McNee coordinator of the conservation farming area added “We also
demonstrated the latest spray technology thanks to Sprayer Barn, and Chris Jones
displayed his award winning design the “Twin Disc Drill” seeder.
Jamie Fisher, speaker coordinator said “Sandy Thorne presented to audiences on
three occasions delving into authoring and choice of subject through to literary
agents and your rights to your work. Her
book ‘Beyond the Razor Wire’ and work at Baxter and Curtin detention centres
was given focus, and at the Food & Wine Experience her hilarious mixture of
doggerel and poetry kept everyone laughing.”
“Meg Strang spoke to an audience eager to hear of her experiences from growing
up in Nyngan and going to university in
Sydney
to working with 2WEB and then ABC radio. Her
work in country
Queensland
, Longreach, Darwin and
Alice Springs
, broadcasting and television experience, and following a dream to get back into
the country, then settling in Dubbo with her husband and two children.”
Jenny Deacon, coordinator of the Antiques & Collectables section said “We
were run off of our feet. Gary
Steele and Mary Lamph were inundated with queries and
Gary
kept extremely busy valuing a range of antique and collectable items which expo
visitors brought in.
Gary
has already begun making plans for next year, to increase the number of items
on display.”
David Butler, ICPA and expo committee member said “The 30 minute ICPA Fashion
Parade showcasing Brigid McLaughlin fashions and a range of children’s
clothing drew over 120 people with some fantastic prizes given away.
The models did a wonderful job and our thanks to the ICPA members who
each year work tirelessly to ensure a great event and to Brigid McLaughlin who
garments are always admired.”
The Nyngan Ag Expo committee members will meet within the coming weeks to begin
planning the 2010 event. If anyone
is interested in joining the team and/or becoming a committee member, please do
not hesitate to contact Robyn Harris, Expo Coordinator by phoning 02 6832 1238.

“A
morning with…. Sandy Thorne & Meg Strang”
Readers of
the RM Williams ‘Outback’ magazine were introduced to
Sandy
in their recent April/May edition. Kristin Williams of Lightening Ridge has
been able to capture
Sandy
’s personality within this photograph. Yarn
spinning, poetry, outback humour and writing books are just a number of
Sandy
’s many talents. With ten books
published including “I’ve Met Some Bloody Wags!”, “Laugh Yer Guts
Out!” and the hilarious “Battler” novels, much of the material was based
on the people she met and worked with on vast isolated stations on Cape York,
the Gulf, out back of Bourke and near Lightning Ridge.
Sandy
was a jillaroo, horse-breaker,
bull-catcher, shearing shedhand, track work rider.
The success of her first book led to a new career from the early 1980’s
as a bush humorist and guest speaker at corporate and public events.
If you could do with a laugh or three, don’t miss
Sandy
’s presentations at Nyngan Ag Expo. As
well as delivering “big mobs of laughs”,
Sandy
will also give helpful advice to those who want to write, or have started to
write ‘that book’ they’ve talked about for years.
Sandy Thorne will also
discuss the book she wrote on her experiences as an officer in our detention
centres, “Beyond the Razor Wire”. Written
from her diary, this fascinating account gives a balanced look at both the good
and not-so-good detainees, their attitudes, and at the treatment they received
courtesy of the Australian taxpayers.
Many of us love to hear the stories of local people, who have worked
passionately within their field of choice, made the most of opportunities,
travelled, excelled, and then returned to be a part of our regional community
again. Meg Strang’s story is one
of these, and a particularly inspiring one!
If you haven’t previously met the woman behind the voice who until recently
presented rural reports to the ears of ABC radio listeners, the Nyngan Ag Expo
will give you that chance.
Meg was born in Nyngan and grew up here. Her
father Warren Strang was a shearer and today Beverley, Meg’s mother still runs
cattle and sheep on the family farm. Meg
completed her primary and secondary schooling in Nyngan, before moving to
Sydney
to complete her Bachelor of Communications degree at
Macquarie
University
.
During her first role in public and media relations for the Antismoking Lobby,
Meg was involved in a terrible horse riding accident in
Sydney
’s
Centennial
Park
. Having broken her hip, it was a
year until she was back on her feet again and working with Lee Parsons at
Outback Arts.
Meg then
moved to radio working with 2WEB, a platform which launched her career with the
ABC. As rural reporter for ABC radio
Longreach for 18months, she covered stories across Western Queensland including
the Simpson Desert and regions around the
Gulf of Carpentaria
.
While working with ABC radio she has worked with ABC Sydney and working on
television reporting with Landline and ABC Alice Springs and
Darwin
.
Meg’s love of this region, the people and particularly her family made her
decision of choosing between rural reporter roles at Dubbo or Rockhampton
straightforward. She regularly
visits her mother’s property at Nyngan with her husband and two young
children.
She developed relationships with people across this region including Bourke,
Walgett and Enngonia, through her work with the ABC and now, working with Dawn
Fardell MP. So come along to the
Nyngan Ag Expo on Saturday 1st August, for “A morning with…”
Sandy Thorne and Meg Strang, two wonderful and inspiring ladies of the land.
Award winning
Agriculture!
At the
2009 ‘Country Energy’ Nyngan Ag Expo taking place on Saturday 1st
August, come along to meet Chris Jones who although is well known in his role as
Chairman of Central West Farming Systems, is also the proud designer of a 40
foot “Twin Disc Drill” seeder, now manufactured by Amity Technology based in
Fargo, North Dakota.
In recent
years, this design has won the Ag Quip Inventors prize, first prize at the
Australian National Field Days in
Orange
and the Conservation Award at the Yorke Peninsula Field Days.
Released in
Canada
last year, the 6inch paired rows with 9inch spacings machine, will be on
display at the Nyngan Ag Expo accompanied by a 12tonne capacity, stainless steel
air tank.
This year
the farming demonstrations will focus on spray technology.
NSW Department of Industry & Investment Agronomist Tim McNee said
that “improper pesticide application is not only a legal issue but can also
result in crop damage and/or poor target control”.
With the use of a “patternator” courtesy of Expo exhibitor Sprayer Barn,
farmers will be able to observe the spray coverage that various nozzles deliver
and therefore an insight into what nozzles should be used in various situations
to increase target efficacy whilst minimising potential drift.
Weed seedling and crop growth stage identification is also essential.
Samples of both will be displayed and discussed with respect to herbicide
application on the day.
The Central West Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is a proud gold sponsor of
the 2009 Nyngan Ag Expo. The Central West CMA this year celebrates five years of
operation under a new model of natural resource management that focuses on
community participation directed towards achieving the catchment vision of vibrant
communities and healthy landscapes.
To achieve this goal the CMA has established strong partnerships, working
together with land managers, community groups, Local Government, industry and
Aboriginal communities to implement on ground natural resource management (NRM)
projects that deliver great outcomes and change in the landscape.
Community engagement is an essential tool in for the Central West CMA to achieve
action and change in the catchment. With
funding received from the both the Australian and New South Wales Governments
the CMA they have invested over $33M supporting in total 2834 NRM projects, a
significant milestone.
CMA
incentive programs include a wide range of initiatives and projects including on
ground support, educational workshops, field days, strategic large scale
projects that maximise landscape change, Local Government projects and community
environmental initiatives that all works towards addressing Catchment Action
Plan management targets.
Nyngan is an integral location in the central west catchment, it houses one of
the eight CMA offices, is home to three committed staff who are active in the
community providing technical advice and natural resource services to the area.
Come along and visit the CMA stand at the Nyngan Ag Expo, talk to staff and find
out what Central West CMA services and activities are currently being offered.
Best Management practice Manuals and Guides will be on display for you to view.

“This

Newton artistry supplies display case. Originally
from the Strand Arcade in
Sydney
, only two were made in the 1880s. One
was kept in Sydney, and the other in
London
. Used to display artist’s oil pots,
paints and art supplies, the glass lid case sits atop a cedar table base with
turned legs.”
“Other
pieces will include a circular mahogany dining table with pedestal base and
ormolu mounts to the legs, a cedar chest of seven draws, two sets of six oak
dining chairs, an oak dining table with extensions and small silver pieces and

He commenced his career in
Great Britain
in 1976 when he owned and managed an antique shop in
Banbury,
Oxfordshire.
After returning to
Australia
in 1979,
Gary
established his business trading antiques at Glanmire Hall Bathurst and various
other locations around the area for 22 years.
This included his restoration of the heritage listed Royal Hotel which at
the time of purchase was nothing more than a wreck due to vandalism and fire”
said Jenny.
“Gary
completed the restoration in 1994 and Glanmire Antiques had a new home.
He also ran two other shops Marnika Antiques (
Canberra
) and Margaret Street Antiques (Sydney) during this time.”
“In
2000,
Gary
sold his shops and returned to live at Mundadoo, Girilambone.
We are very fortunate to have someone with such experience residing in
our community and who is thrilled to be involved in our event.”

The
2009 ‘Country Energy”
Nyngan
Ag Expo will this year take place on Saturday 1st August.
Preparations have begun and the committee is particularly enthusiastic
as they work towards introducing new sponsors to the event and district, more
activities and exhibitors, and events for families.
Terry
Tremain,
chair of the Ag Expo said “We have made a great start with Country Energy
continuing to be our major sponsor in 2009.
Their support and ongoing commitment to our district’s agricultural
expo over numerous years has built a solid and reliable partnership of benefit
to our community. The Country
Energy exhibit is always educational with information on issues such as safety
in and around the home, how to save power and demonstrations of their
equipment.
“Country
Energy is a valued part of the community, we have supported the Nyngan Ag Expo
since its inception and are proud to have helped it grow to one of the most
informative and entertaining events on the north western calendar,” said
regional general manager, Pete Halliwell.
“Our exhibit at this year’s expo will focus on Country Energy’s
$4billion network investment strategy; we will be profiling local
infrastructure projects and the benefits for customers.
Kim Stokes, Ag Expo’s Food and Wine coordinator said “The Food and Wine
Experience have a new sponsor thanks to local business, the Outback Motor Inn.
Jamie and Lucy are very excited to be involved in this opportunity to
present a selection of items from the range of delicious cuisine and wines on
their menu.
“Red and white wines, and a port from Arrowfield Wines of the
Hunter
Valley
will be show cased at our exhibit. Each
wine is produced from the grapes grown on Arrowfield’s vines.
Our cheese and biscuit platters will complement customers choice of
wine, or if they would prefer, drinks from the full bar facility” said Lucy
of the Outback Motor Inn.
“Jamie and I with our chef Franco are preparing the menu to include
curries,
kebabs, pita breads, tapenades, Mediterranean dishes, and
soups served with warm, fresh bread rolls.
Everything will be served from the main tent within the Food and Wine
Experience!
Jamie Fisher, seminar coordinator said “We are very excited to announce that
Sandy Thorne, well known nationally and internationally as
Australia
’s favourite yarn spinner will be coming to the 2009 Country Energy Nyngan
Ag Expo.
“
Sandy
is renowned for entertaining, public speaking and yarn spinning.
A bestselling author and bush poet, her books include “On the shake
of a hand” the story of Arthur Earle, O.A.M, “Working Horses”, “Laugh
yer guts out!”, and “Battler’s Block”.
Sandy
has entertained audiences in
Australia
and also abroad, including a segment on the David Letterman show.
David Butler coordinator of cattle exhibitors said “This is the first time
we have been able to welcome the involvement of a stock exhibitor as a
sponsor. Henry and Verona
Pisaturo founded Veejay Downs Mandalong Specials in 1986 with the purchase of
Mandalong Specials females from Mandalong Studs, and Brahaman females from
Tartrus.
Henry
Pisaturo explained “These females formed the basis of the herd and the
upgrading program began in the Southern Highlands of
New South Wales
. 1995 saw a move to Manildra and with the purchase of additional females, the
expansion of the herd commenced.
“In
1998, with the break-up of the Mandalong herd and the purchase of Bundulla at
Mendooran, the Veejay Downs herd took its latest step of growth with 180
breeders and the majority of heifers retained to increase numbers.
E-Too at Pilliga is used to grow out the weaners.
My wife
Verona
and I will now proceed to 300 cows over the next few years.
“Veejay
Downs are pleased to be a minor sponsor and we look forward to exhibiting our
stock at the Nyngan Ag Expo prior to our 2009 annual bull sale on 19
September.
